The Neers make it a pretty successful trip as they win 2 out of 3 in a fairly long evening. The frosh opened up with exciting sets but lose the match by scores of 18-21, 23-22, 13-21. Mattie Crisp, Avery Niehaus and Celia McMillian all had 2 kills. Angelina Picone served 6 in a row to end the second game. The JV’ers came back and got a W on the board, also winning in 3.
The varsity took the floor and looked good from the start of the first set jumping out to a 12-5 lead. The Neers would relax maybe a little bit too much as they allowed Highlands to make a run. SK held on for a 25-17 win. Highlands’ momentum carried through into the second set as they jumped out to a 14-8 lead. Coach Atwood didn’t look pleased but made a wise decision and didn’t call time out, opting to allow the team come back and put things together on their own. SK would come out on top in extra points by a 27-25 score. SK put things together in the third set and coasted to a 25-16 win. The varsity win wasn’t pretty at times but a win is a win as they say. Nice start to the season.
The varsity stat leaders were seniors Kaitlin Murray (12 kills 3 blocks) and Sophie Dunn (24 assists and 5 aces). Other stats; Ellie Smith had 7 kills 3 blocks; Hailey Robinson had 8 kills 3 blocks; Rachael Figgins had 3 kills 2 blocks; Amarah Nicholson had 4 kills 3 blocks; Kelsey Schmiade had 10 digs and one spectacular play rolling over the ball; Carson Elliott had 4 digs 3 aces and Biz Manser had 3 digs 2 aces.
Highlands was without the services of Jess Ginter, who was ill and unable to make the match. Jess presence as one of the Birds top players and leaders on the floor was definitely missed. We certainly pray Jess will get well soon and get back on the floor. I know she was big time disappointed to not be out on the floor tonight.
These cupcakes had no chance in the bakery tonight.
All smiles after her stunt.
Robinson up for one of her kills.
Fig and Nich up for a block.
JV celebrate their win. ">
