Neers Sweep Dixie in Opener at the Joe

The Neers hosted cross county rival Dixie in the home opener at the Joe.  A good crowd was on hand to support the SK v-ballers.

The freshman team opened up the night with one of the stranger matches I’ve seen in a while.  In a back in forth first set, SK goes down by a score of 19-21.  In the second game, SK walloped the Colonels 21-1.  Yes, 21-1.  Dixie didn’t get their first point until SK had 20.  Avery Niehaus blasted 20 serves in a row including 11 aces.  For the night, she put up 30 serves with a total of 16 aces.  Celia McMillan had a nice evening with 12 hits and 7 kills.

Sorry, I didn't get a report on the JV'ers.  I was serving up LaRosa's and Nachos in the Pioneer CS.

The varsity took to the floor and one again looked good coming out of the gate.  They ran up a big lead against the Colonels but Dixie closed the gap some at the end as SK goes on for a 25-16 win.  Dixie jumped out on SK in the second set by 4 points.  SK closed within 2 at 16-14 prompting a Dixie timeout.  The Neers wouldn’t grab their first lead until they went up 21-20.  SK struggled with prosperity tonight as they were serving for the win at 24-23 but they opened the door and let Dixie back in.  The girls buckled down and pulled out the win by a 27-25 final.  SK would jump out to a nice lead in the third set but ended up holding on to a 25-19 win.

Give Dixie crowded, they were scrappy and didn’t quit and constantly battled SK.   SK may be struggling with some early season jitters and expectations but they still came out with a straight set win.  The chemistry is good and the solid play will come.

SK travels to Williamstown on Thursday night for  a district match-up; JV and Varsity only.  The varsity team will travel to Lexington for the Bluegrass invitational at KBA on Friday and Saturday night.  Good luck girls!

Hot Time in the Old Town Tonight

The SK V-ball season got kicked off tonight as the Neers headed for Ft. Thomas and the gymnasium that they ought to nickname the bakery.  It was one of those nights where you needed confidence in your Degree, Old Spice, Ban, Right Guard, Arm and Hammer, Secret and yes even Axe.  Dang it was toasty.  I was pleased how my Degree held up but a little research after I got home tells me the best product on the market comes from the Body Shop followed by Classic Ban and Burt’s Bees and Natura Ekos.  File for future reference.

The Neers make it a pretty successful trip as they win 2 out of 3 in a fairly long evening.  The frosh opened up with exciting sets but lose the match by scores of 18-21, 23-22, 13-21.  Mattie Crisp,  Avery Niehaus and Celia McMillian  all had 2 kills.  Angelina Picone  served 6 in a row to end the second game.  The JV’ers came back and got a W on the board, also winning in 3.

The varsity took the floor and looked good from the start of the first set jumping out to a 12-5 lead.  The Neers would relax maybe a little bit too much as they allowed Highlands to make a run.  SK held on for a 25-17 win.  Highlands’ momentum carried through into the second set as they jumped out to a 14-8 lead.  Coach Atwood didn’t look pleased but made a wise decision and didn’t call time out, opting to allow the team come back and put things together on their own.  SK would come out on top in extra points by a 27-25 score.  SK put things together in the third set and coasted to a 25-16 win.  The varsity win wasn’t pretty at times but a win is a win as they say.  Nice start to the season.

The varsity stat leaders were seniors Kaitlin Murray (12 kills 3 blocks) and Sophie Dunn (24 assists and 5 aces).  Other stats; Ellie Smith  had 7 kills 3 blocks; Hailey Robinson had 8 kills 3 blocks; Rachael Figgins had  3 kills 2 blocks; Amarah Nicholson  had 4 kills 3 blocks; Kelsey Schmiade had 10 digs and one spectacular play rolling over the ball; Carson Elliott had 4 digs 3 aces and Biz Manser  had 3 digs 2 aces.

Highlands was without the services of Jess Ginter, who was ill and unable to make the match.  Jess presence as one of the Birds top players and leaders on the floor was definitely missed.  We certainly pray Jess will get well soon and get back on the floor.  I know she was big time disappointed to not be out on the floor tonight.

All smiles after her stunt.

SK RANKED 12TH IN COMMONWEALTH

The Neer performance in the Bluegrass State Games last weekend was an eye opener for the program.  The varsity team finished 5th out of 84 teams.  The strong performance was taken note of by other coaches as the SK team came away with a nice dose of respect.

Ratings are nice and a good affirmation of what was done in the off-season but....they mean nothing in the end of the season.

Wishing the team the best of luck!

SK will host the Brossart Mustangs tomorrow night at the Joe in a scrimmage match.

All eyes on the Neer V-ball team to start the season.  Should be a strong one!

Good First Day for SK Vball at BGSG

The Neer v-ball teams headed for Lafayette High School today for Bluegrass State Games action.

The varsity team looked awesome in their two matches this afternoon.  The Neers took on the defending 13th Region Champion Corbin Redhounds (one of my favorite mascots in the Commonwealth).

SK came out against the Hounds and looked a bit jittery falling behind 3-2.  That would be the last time SK would pretty much trail the entire day as Schmee would wallop 12 serves in a row giving the Neers the mo they would never turn back.  SK would go on to win that set by a score of 21-5.  SK jumped out to a big lead in the second set and cruised to a 21-10 win.

The Neers took on another dog in the afternoon matinee as they matched up against the John Hardin Bulldogs.  These dogs were no match either for the Neers as SK puts a drubbing  on Hardin.

The team looked really strong in their 2013 debut.  All phases of the game were strong.  However, things will get tougher tomorrow as they enter pool play against other teams that were either first or second in their pools today.  The tourney will wrap up on Sunday with Final Flight Play.

The JV team also won in two sets later this afternoon.  I haven’t heard a final on the frosh but they did win their first set.
